Conveyor belts in Chile

World's #1 copper producer and #2 lithium producer. The Chile-China Free Trade Agreement allows rubber and PVC belts from Asia to enter at 0% tariff — a competitive advantage no other Southern Cone market enjoys.

Chile is the highest-demand market for high-performance rubber conveyor belts in Latin America. Its porphyry copper mines in the north — Atacama, Antofagasta, Tarapacá — operate transport systems spanning several kilometres at altitudes up to 4,500 m above sea level, with ore abrasivity that wears belts within months if not correctly specified. Further south, the Central Valley exports cherries, blueberries and table grapes to the world, and the salmon industry in Los Lagos and Los Ríos demands hygiene solutions at European standard.

Market figures

  • Copper: Chile produces approximately 5.3–5.5 million tonnes of copper per year (concentrate + refined), representing 27–28% of global production. Codelco is the world's largest state-owned mining company. Escondida mine (BHP) is the world's largest copper mine by output.
  • Lithium: SQM and Albemarle operate at Salar de Atacama (Antofagasta Region). Combined production of lithium carbonate equivalent: ~44,000 t/year (2023). Chile holds 37% of the world's known lithium reserves.
  • Cherries: Chile is the world's largest cherry exporter, with over 300,000 tonnes exported per season, primarily to China. The O'Higgins Region and Metropolitan Region account for 60% of production.
  • Salmon: Chile is the world's 2nd largest salmon producer (after Norway), with more than 1 million tonnes annual biomass farmed in Los Lagos, Los Ríos and Aysén.

Key companies and regions:

  • Copper mining: Codelco (Chuquicamata, El Teniente, Andina, Radomiro Tomic), BHP (Escondida), Antofagasta Minerals (Los Pelambres, Centinela), Anglo American (Los Bronces), Glencore/Anglo (Collahuasi)
  • Lithium: SQM (Salar de Atacama), Albemarle / Sociedad Chilena del Litio
  • Cherries and table grapes: O'Higgins Valley (Rancagua, San Fernando), Maule, Coquimbo
  • Wine: Maipo, Colchagua, Casablanca, Leyda and Limarí valleys
  • Salmon and aquaculture: Puerto Montt, Puerto Aysén, Quellón, Coyhaique
  • Ports: San Antonio and Valparaíso (central zone); Antofagasta and Mejillones (northern mining zone); Puerto Montt (south)

Products and specific applications in Chile

ST belts for major copper mining (Atacama, Antofagasta, Tarapacá)

Porphyry copper mines in northern Chile operate belts spanning 5 to 15 km. Technical specifications follow DIN-22131, ISO 15236 and AS3569 standards that Codelco, BHP and Antofagasta Minerals engineering departments require in their supply tenders. Fuda Rubber ST630–ST3150 belts with combined H+D cover (rip-stop + high abrasion) match these specifications. For underground sections (El Teniente, Andina), MSHA flame-retardant certification is mandatory.

ComiX ALEX for high-altitude operations (Collahuasi 4,400 m; Radomiro Tomic 3,000 m)

At extreme altitudes access is vehicle-only and downtime costs millions per hour. The ComiX ALEX weighs 70% less than conventional vulcanisers — decisive when the equipment travels in the maintenance pick-up cab. The accelerated cure cycle (1-10 minutes depending on belt thickness) drastically reduces unplanned stoppages.

FDA belts for cherry packing and optical sorters

Chile is the world's leading cherry exporter and Central Valley packing houses operate high-speed optical sorters (up to 10 simultaneous lines). Belts must be PVC 2-ply, white or neutral FDA, 2-3 mm, smooth, antistatic for the optical sorter, with high-strength heat-welded splice. Campaign runs October-January: belt replacement must happen in August-September or the entire season is lost.

Homogeneous belts for salmon processing (Los Lagos, Los Ríos)

Atlantic salmon processing plants work at -5 °C to +12 °C with sea water, chlorides and alkaline and hypochlorite cleaning products. Homogeneous TPU belts without internal fabric carrying EU 10/2011 certification are the standard for plants approved to export to the EU and USA. Resistance to hypochlorite at 200 ppm is a non-negotiable technical requirement.

Logistics and import — Chile

  • Main ports: San Antonio and Valparaíso for the central zone. Antofagasta and Mejillones (Zofri Free Zone) for the northern mining zone — purchases in Zofri allow deferral of tariff payment until goods leave the free zone.
  • Chile-China FTA — 0% tariff: The Chile-China Free Trade Agreement (in force since 2006, expanded 2023) eliminates tariffs on most industrial goods, including rubber conveyor belts (HS 4010) and plastic belts (HS 3926). This is a significant advantage over Argentina, Peru or Uruguay where MERCOSUR CET of 14% applies. The invoice must certify Chinese origin to claim the preference.
  • Transit time from China: 22-28 days direct (Shanghai → San Antonio/Valparaíso, no transshipment). One of the shortest transits from Asia to South America via the Pacific route. From Spain/Europe: 22-26 days (Atlantic → Panama Canal → San Antonio).
  • Customs particularities: Chile has no exchange rate restrictions. The National Customs Service (SNA) requires a certificate of origin to claim FTA preferences. Major mining companies typically have framework supply contracts with pre-approved technical specifications.

Typical use cases

Collahuasi mine, 4,400 m above sea level, Tarapacá (Anglo American / Glencore)

Replacing an ~8 km section of ST1600 belt, 1,400 mm wide, H+D cover for the high-hardness porphyry ore. Altitude imposes temperature cycles from -15 °C to +38 °C in the same day. Engineering requires DIN-22131 certification and documented tensile test per batch. Typical Fuda manufacturing lead time: 8-12 weeks from order approval.

Cherry packing house in Colchagua Valley, O'Higgins (campaign Oct-Jan)

Optical cherry sorter for export. Belt replacement required before campaign (delivery before 15 September). Specification: PVC 2-ply, white FDA, 2.5 mm, smooth, antistatic AS, 400 mm wide, heat-welded splice. The sorter runs at 10 t/hour — the belt cannot fail in season.

Salmon processing plant in Puerto Montt, Los Lagos

Plant with EU export approval. Working temperature: -5 °C to +12 °C, hypochlorite washes at 200 ppm. Requirements: homogeneous TPU 3 mm, white, EU 10/2011, no internal fabric, heat-welded joint. The plant operates 20 h/day, 11 months/year. Annual belt replacement due to splice wear in the acid-chlorinated environment.
