Peru presents two industrial realities unmatched by any other market in the region. In the highlands, mines in Arequipa, Apurímac and Áncash operate at 3,500-4,800 m above sea level with copper and zinc production volumes among the world's highest. Three hundred kilometres away, in the coastal valleys of La Libertad, Ica and Piura, Pacific water irrigated over desert sand produces asparagus and blueberries that arrive fresh in Europe within 72 hours. These are two worlds requiring two completely different types of conveyor belt.
Market figures
- •Copper: Approximate production of 2.7–3.0 million tonnes per year. Peru is the world's #2 producer. Cerro Verde mine (Arequipa), Las Bambas (Apurímac) and Antamina (Áncash) are three of the ten largest copper mines in the world.
- •Zinc and silver: Peru is the 1st or 2nd world producer of zinc (output ~1.4–1.6 Mt/year) and the 2nd of silver (~3,000–3,500 t/year). These metals generate as much belt demand as copper in volume terms.
- •Asparagus: Peru is the world's largest exporter of asparagus (fresh and canned), with more than 350,000 tonnes exported annually. The Virú and Chao valleys (La Libertad) and Ica are the production centres.
- •Blueberries: Peru has become one of the world's largest exporters of fresh blueberries, with over 200,000 tonnes exported recently. Production is concentrated in La Libertad and Lambayeque.
Key companies and regions:
- –Copper: Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde (Freeport-McMoRan, Arequipa), MMG Ltd. (Las Bambas, Apurímac), Antamina (BHP+Glencore+Teck+Mitsubishi, Áncash), Southern Copper Corp. (Cuajone and Toquepala, Tacna/Moquegua)
- –Zinc/silver: Volcan Compañía Minera (Pasco), Animón/El Brocal (Pasco), Los Quenuales (Áncash)
- –Gold: Newmont Peru (Yanacocha, Cajamarca), La Arena (La Libertad), Shahuindo (Cajamarca)
- –Agri-export: Camposol (largest company), Danper, Agrokasa/IAT, Complejo Agroindustrial Beta (all in La Libertad, Ica)
- –Fish meal/fish oil: TASA, CFG Investment, Exalmar (ports of Chimbote, Paita, Pisco)
- –Main port: El Callao (Lima) — handles ~90% of Peru's sea-borne foreign trade
Products and specific applications in Peru
ST belts for major copper mining (Arequipa, Apurímac, Áncash)
Peru's three major copper operations — Cerro Verde (2,700 m), Las Bambas (4,200 m) and Antamina (4,300 m) — share extreme altitude and difficult access. Las Bambas has no railway connection: all supplies arrive via mountain road from Cusco. Equipment weight is as critical as in Chile. Fuda ST1000-ST2000 belts with combined H+D cover are the standard, with MSHA flame-retardant certification for underground zinc workings in Pasco. Integrated integrity sensors for tear detection are an increasingly common requirement in MMG and Freeport procurement specifications.
FDA belts for asparagus and blueberry packing on the northern coast
Packing houses in the Virú and Chincha valleys process fresh asparagus at 4-10 °C for direct airfreight export to Europe and North America. Cold chain starts at the washing and grading conveyor. Standard PVC 2-ply, white FDA, smooth surface, antistatic for optical sorter, is the format. White asparagus has higher requirements still: the belt must not scratch the product or accumulate soil in splices. For optical blueberry sorting, the belt should be black or dark blue to contrast with the berry and facilitate image processing.
Rubber belts for fishmeal plants (Chimbote, Paita, Pisco)
Chimbote is the world's largest fishing port by historical anchovy landings. Fishmeal plants use EP rubber belts on their raw fish conveyors from unloading to primary crusher. The environment is extremely aggressive: fish fatty acids, sea water and temperatures up to 55 °C in the drying zone. Grade OR (oil resistant) cover combined with grade D for anchovy abrasion is the correct specification. Generic PVC belts dissolve in this environment within weeks.
Logistics and import — Peru
- •Entry ports: El Callao (Lima) is the largest port on the South American Pacific coast, operated by APM Terminals and DP World. Paita (Piura) for the north. Matarani (Arequipa) for the southern mining corridor.
- •Most common Incoterms: CIF El Callao for industrial imports from Asia. EXW/FOB from supplier for importers with their own logistics. Major mining companies typically negotiate CIF destination port with customs clearance included.
- •Transit time from China: ~23-30 days direct (Shanghai → El Callao, Pacific route, similar to Chile). Spain/Europe → El Callao: ~25-28 days (via Panama Canal).
- •Peru-China FTA: In force since 2010. Rubber and PVC belts from China enter at a reduced or 0% preferential tariff — exact position to be confirmed. SUNAT is the customs authority; requires certificate of origin to claim the preference. The Peruvian sol is relatively stable with no exchange rate restrictions.
Typical use cases
Las Bambas mine (4,200 m above sea level, Apurímac) — MMG Ltd. / China Minmetals
One of the world's largest copper mines, with no railway access. Client needs to replace an ore transport section. Specification: ST1200, 1,200 mm wide, H+D cover. Maintenance crew can only access by mountain road. ComiX ALEX reduces an emergency field splice from 8 to 2 hours, with equipment that fits in the back of the maintenance vehicle.
Asparagus processing plant in Virú, La Libertad (export to Europe)
Company holding GLOBALG.A.P. and BRC certification. Renewing belts on white asparagus washing and grading line. Temperature: 4-10 °C. Requirements: PVC 2-ply, white FDA, 2.5 mm, smooth, antistatic AS, 500 mm wide, heat-welded splice. Campaign starts in August; maximum delivery date is 30 July.
Fishmeal plant in Chimbote, Áncash (anchovy)
The plant needs to replace the belts on its raw anchovy unloading system. Environment: fish fatty acids, sea water, temperatures up to 55 °C in the drying zone. Specification: EP 4-ply, 800 mm wide, grade OR (oil resistant) + grade D cover. A generic PVC belt degrades in 3-4 weeks in this environment; EP with OR cover lasts 12-18 months.
